Furs on Television – Dynasty Season 1 (1981)

Fine, I’ll do it myself.

Waiting for the official HD releases of Dynasty is a losing game, so here we go. The good news is that we start with a really easy one. Dynasty Season 1 is not the show that became the monster of nighttime television a few years later. The basic building blocks are there, but the resulting mansion is a tad… shabby.

While the show would continue to be about the family at the head of a large oil business, the first season includes an entire plot line involving actual oil workers. Thus, valuable screen time is taken up by roughnecks on rigs and in blue-collar bars. All of this is completely removed starting in Season 2, where it fully invests in “rich people problems” and remains there to the end. Arguably, it would later transition into “batshit insane rich people problems” as the stakes always needed to be higher and higher.

Also, for those who might be scratching their heads wondering how I could have left out Joan Collins… Dame Collins shows up in Season 2. The show retooled after a lackluster response and Season 1, and the building blocks began to form into what would become one of the biggest shows of the 80s.

I have to admit, they hit the ground running with Krystle Carrington (Linda Evans) in a lynx fur stroller in the very first episode. Important to note it’s the very first part of the three-part “first episode.” The promise of what is to follow is great; you just have to realize you’ll be patiently waiting for about a season and a half for things to really get going.

This is why I’m padding this entry (and the edit) with the white feather boa worn by Fallon (Pamela Sue Martin) in Episode 3. It will also appear again later in our next entry.

This is certainly the episode to pick for variety, though the lynx in E01 gets more screen time in total. We see the return of the white feather boa and Krystle in two fur coats. The first is… not easy to identify, to be honest. It’s either a mink, sable, or possibly fisher. It’s “brown,” which is what I will go with. Finally, shortly before the credits roll, Krystle briefly appears in a fox fur stroller, but it is not on screen for very long.
