Furs on Television – Dynasty Season 3 (1982-83)

FurGlamor - Featured Image - Dynasty Season 03

Season 3 is where, as the kids say, they “lock-in.” The formula is refined to perfection, becoming one of the top 10 shows on TV. This is reflected in several ways, including in fashion. Except for a minor early season blip, Alexis breaks free from the chains of “old lady fur” around Episode 15. While it is undoubtedly the case she will appear in mink or sable again as the series progresses, her fur wardrobe generally is far more dynamic after this.

Which is to say: Thank goddess, she’s finally wearing fox.

Krystle is less of a factor in Season 3, though she does make some notable appearances in fur. Season 3 is really about Alexis putting in all the work—and doing so beautifully, of course.

Dynasty Season 03 – Stats

Episode 1 kicks things off with Alexis wearing fur to the hospital. This is a strangely common trope in this series. Because drama, the characters find themselves in Denver medical institutions often, and they are always looking their best.

As stated in the intro, there is a brief costuming blip before Alexis finally gets out of the brown-paper-bag furs, and that is this lovely, probably bobcat fur coat, though small odds it’s full-on lynx. I’m headcannoning there was some mixup in production that day, and Krystle’s furs were on set instead.

I believe the summary “crazy crappy stole wearing” covers Claudia’s (Pamela Bellwood) first time wearing fur on the show. Claudia is not fully authorized to wear fur until Season 5. Alexis, on the other hand, rapidly returns to her quaint, church-approved coats later in this episode.

Krystle is not absent this season. Though less prominent, she gets to wear a few striking furs, including this fox tail stole. This is quite a rarity and one of my favorites, though certainly not to everyone’s tastes. I believe the only other time I recall seeing something similar is on an episode of Hotel (which I may eventually get to as well).

Dynasty Season 03 – Episode 05

Find-a-Fur:

Very short “walk on, walk off” shot of Alexis holding a black fox fur stole. Humble though it may be, it is the first fox she wears in the series.

Dynasty Season 03 – Episode 06

Another extremely brief enter-holding-fur shot of Krystle with a lighter-colored coat that is probably mink.

In Episode 8, the costume department bravely explores the ultimate boundaries of “how brown can Alexis’ coats be” before finally giving up; I’ll give them credit, at least.

Dynasty Season 03 – Episode 12

Another slightly more exotic choice for Krystle is this chinchilla hat and, I presume, coat from Episode 12. No, she never does anything but hold it, we will never know if it’s a coat or a stole, sadly. I’d be the obnoxious voice at the back of the set going, “But what if she actually put it on?”

Dynasty Season 03 – Episode 13

Find-a-Fur:

(All times are approximate)

In between Alexis’ perfectly respectable black mink coat, Krystle wears a perfectly respectable mink jacket very briefly.

The last line of brown fur defense as it finally crumbles is this hat and tiny stole combo. Strange hill to die on, but at least it’s dead.

That sound you hear is my knuckles cracking.

Might as well pretend the show starts here, as after this point, Alexis starts wearing the furs you probably remember Alexis wearing. The first wave is, arguably, comparatively tame. A simple scouting party led by this lovely (frost?) fox hat and two tiny tails if you don’t blink at the wrong time.

Dynasty Season 03 – Episode 16

Find-a-Fur:

Hats lead to stoles, in this case, silver fox ones that combine some classical Hollywood glamor updated for the 80s.

Dynasty Season 03 – Episode 17

It’s time to declare victory and go home. If this is a “statement fur,” that statement is: “Finally, I can wear something better than boring brown coats.” The white fox hat, muff, and stroller combo, being the first significant fox outfit on the show, is near perfection and, thankfully, just a taste of what is on the horizon.

Much like a good soap opera twist, there is a shocking reveal near the end of the episode that tiresome brown fur has survived and may still be plotting revenge…

Jokes aside, the shift in the type of furs Alexis is wearing in the back half of Season 3 is night and day. Clearly, someone decided to skew her wardrobe, for lack of a better term, “younger” in terms of furs. Likely, it was seen as a “glow up” to have Alexis’ fashion better reflect her “over the top” character.

For those of you joining us more recently, it is imperative you understand that Alexis is the physical embodiment of “serving cunt” decades before anyone ever thought to combine those two words. One simply does not serve cunt in lackluster fur coats.

Dynasty Season 03 – Episode 19

Oh hey, it’s Dime-Store Burt Reynolds during the first of his 2 season run. Anyway, Alexis, big fox coat, enough said.

Dynasty Season 03 – Episode 22

Find-a-Fur:

(All times are approximate)

The back half of season 3 finds Krystle pretty much entirely absent on the fur fashion front until episode 22, where she pops up with a fox stole. And is quickly overshadowed by Alexis in a full-length lynx coat. However, Krystle gets the last fur of the season with a set of fox cuffs.
