Couple of reasons I wanted to do the show. First, it’s fucking awesome, of course. Second, it is a bellwether for fur fashion and the end of the ‘80s. Were one, say, alive during that time and paying attention to such things, one may have started to notice a certain troubling reduction in the number of furs appearing on their screens around 1987… as if the color was slowly draining from the world.
This is apparent when we look at the overall stats for Season 7, which show a decline as dramatic as any shocking soap opera twist. Both episodes and runtime have decreased by 50% from Season 6. This is not to say there aren’t some very good things in this season (including what I consider Alexis’ best fur), but clearly, there is far less of everything.
Something else was also draining from the world: the show’s ratings. It slipped to 24th in Season 7 and couldn’t save The Colbys from cancellation at the end of its second season. Most of the big nighttime soaps were starting to falter as the 1980s came to a close, and they would all be gone by the very early 1990s.

You’ll quickly notice the far longer gaps between “fur” episodes. Alexis finally shows up in a fur in Episode 5, but this time, there is no plot-relevant reason why it took so long, unlike in previous seasons. Also, unlike previous seasons, she doesn’t appear in something specular, merely a sable-trimmed coat, which is meh at best.
Blink, and you’ll miss it hat on Dominque at the end of a courtroom scene.

I am not shy about criticizing the show when I feel it necessary. I have several pet peeves about fur fashion, and one of the top three is: “Let’s use Persian lamb instead of white fox.” Persian lamb turns what might have been true greatness into a shaggy, unkempt shadow of itself. To further annoy me, not only is this indignity forced on Alexis, but this particular piece is heavily featured in multiple scenes in this episode, turning what could have been a classic all-timer into a footnote.

Another more extended episode that fortunately is held up by something a bit better looking: Dominque’s fox-trimmed mink vest. The vest appears in multiple scenes, culminating in it being snuggled up to The-Black-Haired-Guy-Alexis-Sometimes-Sleeps-With when Alexis walks in wearing a particularly drab mink coat, making her think he’s become The-Black-Haired-Guy-Dominque-Sometimes-Sleeps-With.

It takes until Episode 20 for the costume designer to remember Alexis hasn’t worn fox sleeves yet this season. At least they make up for it by adding a lovely matching hat.

The fact they clearly know how fantastic white fox fur looks on Alexis only makes Episode 16 even more of an affront. If you ask me, and you’re reading this, so yeah, you kinda did, this is “peak Alexis.” I consider this the best coat she wears on the show. I know the various lynx coats may be more popular, but I remain fiercely loyal to my kamioshi of furs.

Krystle gets one half-decent fur before the season ends: what appears to be a slightly trimmed fox that shows up at the start of the episode.
This is where I admit I am not your strongest soldier. The finale features a wedding (with guns, but without an overt massacre), and Krystle wears a dress with some small amount of mink trim on it. What you see above are some of the times where it appears most clearly, but I confess I could not be pained to meticulously catalog its every appearance because… well… look at it. It’s just so… pathetic.
Dominque also briefly appears wearing some sable cuffs.
So, Season 7 ends with a bunch of dudes with guns showing up at a wedding, but the producers learned their lesson from Season 5 and did not end it with a slow pan over the bodies of the cast after a hail of gunfire, merely a tepid “hostage situation.”
