Furs on Television – Dynasty Season 9 (1988-89)

FurGlamor - Featured Image - Dynasty Season 09

All good things… Oh, wait. That’s the wrong series finale. Anyway, Dynasty ending with the ‘80s was appropriate, to say the least. It epitomized ’80s fur fashion, and both faded away at the same time.

That being said, I also want to give credit where due: Dynasty was our strongest warrior. It is important to understand that what you’re seeing in this update was not the state of fur fashion on TV at this time. There’s way more here than you’d find pretty much anywhere else.

The stats for the last three seasons were basically the same: about half an hour of fur fashion per season. So, while the rest of television was on a rapid descent to zero between 87 and 89, Dynasty held out as long as it could.

What’s this? A glamorous lady of a certain age with an English accent? Enter Stephanie Becham as Sabella “Sable” Colby, Alexis’ cousin. They already pulled the trigger on “sister” with Caress, and even an outlandishly dramatic nighttime soap figured it would be ridiculous to just keep making up siblings. (I didn’t think this update would have so many Star Trek references).

How can you tell the difference between Alexis’ sister and Alexis’ cousin? Easy, Caress wore sable, and Sable does not wear sable. And they are two entirely different people. Episode six leans heavily on this silver fox stole.

Krystle briefly breaks up the silver fox train with a sheared jacket.

As ratings declined, so did budgets. Linda and Joan were expensive, so they were no longer in every episode. Krystle exits early, but not before her final series appearance in fur in this mink or sable-trimmed coat.

Case in point: Sable was brought in from The Colbys to “distract” from Alexis appearing in only half the season’s episodes. Oh, and clearly, Sable will cut a bitch.

Like an old friend, Alexis white fox loungewear returns one final time in Season 9. I am grateful because it’s always a shoo-in to appear in the YouTube thumbnail.

This is another busy episode, of which there are few in Season 9. Sable returns in mink.

Alexis swings around her muff.

Finally, Sable takes a cue from Alexis’ fox-trimmed capes, just no longer in “tan.”

Episode 12 follows on from 11 directly, so we get a little more of Sable’s cape.

Another final, historic appearance, this time of Alexis’ black fox stole.

Sable returns in white not-sable.

And black not-sable.

Alexis gets a final couple episode victory lap with this silver fox hat and stole. I believe this may be the same hat as in S04E26.

Dynasty Season 09 – Episode 18

Alexis’s final fur in the series is this silver fox-trimmed top with big bell sleeves. My girl went out in fox, at least.

Dynasty Season 09 – Episode 19

The final fur ever seen on the show was given to Sable, the dark mink she’s worn multiple times this season. Sure, it would have been a little more appropriate for it to have been Episode 18. Or a giant lynx.

It’s the very end, so it would always be bittersweet, so perhaps this was also appropriate.
