This is exactly what I love to see in the ol’ suggestion box. I had never heard of it, but it turns out to be a 20% club member. Recent trends aside, the 2020s are still pretty weak. It remains to be seen whether “boom boom” fashion makes any real impact in media, but so far it hasn’t escaped TikTok. So we’re left with indie fare like Grasshoppers to do a lot of the heavy lifting.

Grasshoppers – The Film
Grasshoppers, or “Not Notable Enough for a Wikipedia Entry,” “There Are No Reviews on Our IMDb Page,” and “We Used a Different Fur Coat for the Poster,” is described by IMDb as the story of two immigrants getting drunk and house-hunting in a gated community. Even at 16x fast forward, I can tell some subtle subtext is being left out.
Grasshoppers – The Fur
At its core, this movie poses a profound question: Do you like full-length tanuki fur coats? The movie assumes the answer is “yes.” Because you will see one tanuki fur coat, and you will see it a lot. The coat in question is worn by Irina (Iva Gocheva). The coat is worn throughout the film, though it is taken off from time to time. The numbers don’t lie; we have a new top 5 runtime entry where the fur is present for basically a third of the entire film.
If you were watching the 1984 version of Unfaithfully Yours and thinking: but it needs more tanuki, this is the film for you. Basically, what I’m saying is that there is just slightly more fur in the film than in 2021’s other big fur film: Cruella.
As far as the quality of the coat is concerned, I’m giving it a “B,” because there are better (fox) and worse (mink) options to spend an entire movie with. The cinematography is a hindrance at times, as the camera tends to be either too far or too close to appreciate the coat fully. Bonus points for when you notice the split in the sleeve.
