Furs on Film – A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (1971)

It is time to close out spooky month with another dive into the lesser-known works of horror master Lucio Fulci. This one probably rates a little higher than Murder Rock: Dancing Death, but that’s also not a particularly tough bar to clear. While Murder Rock had some variety going for it, A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin is laser-focused on a single coat.

A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin – The Film

Rich lady tells her psychiatrist she dreamed of murdering her beautiful neighbor. Skip to: the beautiful neighbor lady is dead in a way that is shockingly similar, or “exactly the same,”  to the dream she described to her psychiatrist. Can rich lady clear her name? She hopes so because this amazingly complex plan involves her getting away with killing her beautiful neighbor.

A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin – The Furs

Rich lady is Carol Hammond (Florinda Bolkan), and her richness is established in a variety of ways, one of which includes this that appears when she vividly describes her dreams.

I perhaps bruised the lede a bit when I glossed over the events preceding the murder. I won’t go into great detail (and, in fairness, neither does the movie), but only one of the participants has a particularly happy ending.

A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin certainly has some things to recommend it, particularly if you find wind-blown chinchilla particularly fetching, and even manages to provide a decent runtime by modern standards. As it is an exploitative ’70s giallo, you will have to deal with some somewhat dated attitudes about several things, so I won’t be particularly judgmental if you just check in for the “now kiss” scenes and then make for the door.
