This almost became another two-parter, but it kind of fell on the margin, so I decided to keep it simple. So, it’s a longer update, to be sure. Since I already called Season 5 “peak,” what was Season 6? The network and the producers intended it to be “peak,” but it did not work out that way. 

The show got a 30-episode order and a spin-off, which, yes, I will get to. It started with the highest-rated episode in the show’s history, which was also part of the problem. People tuned in to see who survived “The Moldavian Massacre,” and the answer was “pretty much everybody.” This answer was considered “disappointing.” 

Now, again, this is outside the scope of this blog, but I’ll just say there’s blame to go around here. Yes, the show raised the stakes too high, and if there was a narratively satisfying way out of it, they did not find it. On the other hand, even in the pre-Internet days, before online discourse would have made everyone sick of hearing about it before it even aired, the fact is no one should have been surprised they did not, in fact, kill off the entire cast of a show whose success was heavily rooted in that cast.

Anyway, the show’s ratings slipped, which would be a common theme in the coming seasons.

Season 6 takes a few episodes to get going on the fur fashion front because, again, writing themselves out of this corner took a few episodes, and this version of Moldavia is unseasonably warm. The opener did give us Dominque holding a silver fox coat, at least.

Dominque returns to unseasonably warm Denver, but that’s still not a problem for anyone’s fashion choices. She starts wearing mink pretty quickly.

I would also point out that post-Moldavia, they rapidly moved into setting up The Colbys. I feel like that really is no excuse for a lack of furs on the show, though.

Dynasty Season 06 – Episode 04

Krystle eventually gets her furs back as well, starting with a very nice full-length fox. She is the center of a main plot line that starts after Moldavia. She’s visiting Sammy Jo, who is “scheming.” 

I suspect dipping into daytime soap plotlines like “replace character with evil twin” may have contributed slightly to the ratings decline. When Faux Krystle returns from her plastic surgery, she wears a slightly less interesting coat.

Like in Season 5, you may be asking, “Where is Alexis?” Well, this time, she was not in the slammer; she was back in Moldavia, posing as a nun. (As one does.) Like in Season 5, she returns spectacularly, wearing a white fox hat, boa, and cuffs. 

Meanwhile, Dominque spends some time in a chinchilla hat and stole.

Claudia gets a classic ’80s full-length fox that appears in a couple of scenes, the second one brief.

Alexis spends multiple scenes in Episode 8 wearing only the cuffs. To be honest, this ends up feeling like “runtime padding,” but it’s fur, it’s there, so it counts. It would have been spectacular if she had kept the hat and boa on, but this was not the case.

Dressing Sammy Jo in “younger looking fur” took a turn for the worse this season, with a sheared mink jacket being a rare but complete miss.

After nearly (not) getting everyone killed in Moldavia (it was her royal wedding), Amanda briefly appears in a nice lynx stroller. You will notice something that looks like spotted fur, but you would be incorrect—it is fully printed. That’s why I’m not bothering with any shots of it. Feel free to argue, but I’m fairly certain this type of fur was banned by then. 

Also, Sammy Jo has a flashback to the scene from Episode 4 where Krystle is in her full-length fox, but it’s the exact same shots, just with a classic TV “memory blur” around them.

So, Alexis was sidelined early on because she was in Moldavia rescuing Black-Haired-Guy-Alexis-Sleeps-With-Sometime. While wearing a lynx jacket, Alexis discovered he has become Black-Haired-Guy-Alexis-Daughter-Sleeps-With-Sometime.

She then charges home in such a distressed mental state that her lynx coat changes completely!

Dominique gets a little more attention in the latter part of Season 6, starting with this agreeably thick fox coat that is, sadly, blotted out by a sizable flower arrangement for much of its time on screen.

Episode 22 is another big one, but it has less padding (though, amusingly, there is some, precisely the same as in Episode 8).

Shocker! The Rani has appeared in Alexis’ bedroom to steal her furs!

Wait, I’m being told most people who read this won’t get that joke, and that is, in fact, Caress Morell (Kate O’Mara), Alexis’ younger sister, who has arrived to be the new special guest villain. Alexis goes full power play mode and casually gives little sis one of her full-length sable coats.

Elsewhere, Alexis pops up in a random white fox-trimmed hood. I’m not complaining, 

Else-elsewhere, Dominque brings us a very rare full-length blue fox fur coat to the show. 

Finally, as you can see from the list, those good ole white fox cuffs appear to pad out a couple more scenes in this episode. The way they are shot, the cuffs aren’t even on screen for extended periods when she’s wearing them. Like the first time, it’s clearly the same top as the one she’s wearing with the hood, which would have made this all so much better had it stuck around.

Episode 27 gives us that rare guest cast in fur, though it’s a relatively uninteresting black mink worn to a graveyard. This is about my precise excitement level for black mink coats, so, an excellent choice by the wardrobe department.

Dominque takes up wearing down-trimmed nightwear after Alexis switches to feathers.

Krystle wears a dark-trimmed cape. I can’t tell what it is, but it seems short enough to be mink.

Finally, Alexis saves us all again with a full-length lynx fur that gets some decent screen time. It appears to lack sleeves, so somewhat reminiscent of the kind of furs she wore back in The Bitch. Since we get to see the back, it also seems to have a hood; sadly, Alexis does not go full Sith Lord.

Dynasty Season 06 – Episode 29

You may also be thinking, “How do they top the Moldavian Massacre?” in the Season 6 finale. Thankfully, they don’t even try. I mean, where else can you go? Aliens? 

What? Oh, wait… really? No shit, huh… Wow…

Alexis and Blake’s estranged brother bankrupt Blake and kick them out of their mansion. That’s it. That’s the big finale. In announcing this, Alexis gleefully drops what we presume to be some of Krystle’s furs over the top rope railing. 

Bah GAWD!
