Time to cover that controversial Marilyn Monore biopic.
What?
What?
Norma Jean & Marilyn – The Film
This version is a “made-for-television” movie from 1996. The “television” in question was HBO, so today, it would be a twelve-part prestige series, not a movie. She'd spend seven hours in her small town to really hammer home the squalor. The “hook” here is adult Marilyn regularly hallucinates her “pre-fame” self as Norma Jean Dougherty throughout the film.
Norma Jean & Marilyn – The Furs
Most of the fur is worn by Mira Sorvino as Marilyn. Norma Jean (Ashley Judd) is not entirely left out, though. She fantasizes about being a famous Hollywood star early on, including a white fox fur stole.
Sorvino, as Marilyn, wears a variety of period-authentic furs. This ramps up from a rather distressed-looking stole to a classic wrap and a dyed fox collar. That collar may be the most out of place in the film, but it's lovely and receives the most screen time of any of the furs in the film.
Regarding historical accuracy, a jacket with a white fur collar and the fur worn during the famous “Happy Birthday Mister President” show are represented. Reviewing the footage from the night, it appears that the stole wasn't a white fox. Granted, the footage from the event isn't exactly 4k, so it's not easy to tell.
I firmly support creative license in historic recreations involving adding fox fur. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of screen time for it.
Overall the film delivers about eight minutes of fur, which would be a solid showing for something without a runtime surpassing two hours. The seeds of prestige television grew even back in 1996, so eight minutes only nets a six percent total fur runtime.
- Fur Runtime: approx 08:07 minutes
- Film Runtime: 135 minutes
- On-Screen Ratio: 6.01%
